Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character
I agree with THX on the hand grip. You could try to render with GI-Joe (or FG in MRay) to bring out the details a bit more. The gun looks very good, only a bit smooth at places. The finger guard looks very thin at the moment, but I may be mistaken about that.
Also Witchy is right, the AKs eject forward to the side not straight out, but it would also depend on what model it is as there are AKs chambered for all kinds of ammunition with differend casing weights. No need to be simulation perfect, go with what looks right.
Hey Everyone I really appreciate the feedback. I have implemented everything people have recommended. Here are the changes I have made. minor tweeks still needed before done texturing. I am trying to find some video of an someone firing an AK so I can see the actual motion of the complete firing sequence but can;t seem to find it. If anyone has seen one please pass me the url. once again feedback is welcome.

And after calming me down with some orange slices and some fetal spooning,
E.T. revealed to me his singular purpose.
That looks a whole lot better. Great job so far, but one thing is still missing. Make it look a little battle worn, have the rifle tell us a story about its owner. Give it some scratches and a worn look. Have us wonder where that rifle has seen some action. I do like the front guard, that has improved the model by a whole lot and so has the stock. The only thing I can think of is renting some action movies to get some animation idea's. It think the Vietnam Movie with Mel Gibson will have AK's firing and so does possibly Black Hawk Down. I hope this helps.
I will go through my DVD collection. Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, Black Hawk Down and a few more. I am working on the scratches as we speak. TXS theaps.
In order to film ejection accurately people should really move the camera not the weapon - it's ok for the action of the bolt but it only represents the ejection pattern you might get when a weapon is being held at a funny angle tilted down towards the ground. Still, should help you in getting the moving parts right.
Looking better and that video should help out some. Add a few more dents and scratches on the reciever, I see them on the magazine. Add the scratches to the tip of the barrell and outside of the chamber. And around the selector switch and the charging handel. Any parts that move should have some wear. I still would look at the action movies to get a good idea about camera ankles and shake. Good idea about camera shake, witchy.
