Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.
OK, I'm almost done with the wheel. The rims are the ones in every CSL reference I have, and the tire is a Michelin Pilot Sport PS2. Gonna mess with the tire a little more, but I'm happy so far.
It's modeled with polys. I used the technique of making one section of tread, and then duplicating it in a long row, and finally adding a non-linear bend deformer to bend it 360 degrees. You can find a tutorial on that technique here:
It's expensive with the number of polys, but gives you a lot more accuracy on the tread. Displacement maps can work well, but for me it takes just as long to make a nice displacement map as it does to model it directly.
It never even crossed my mind to model treads before, displacement maps seemed to be the easy option for me, I will definately try it out in the future but I rekon my PC may melt!!
Hey dilberts, Your model is looking great! Well done. I have only done some organic modelling so far, so I wouldn't know where to start on a project like this, but i have been reading through your thread and it's been really helpful. Cheers.
No updates I'm afraid. Works been killing me the last few days, so there's been no time for fun with Maya. Anyway, arran, if you have any questions on techniques/tips for non-organic objects let me know.
