not quite Photoshop - I used Paint Shop Pro (similar but HEAPS cheeper user added image )

I'm not sure that I understand exactly what it is you're asking in your first question... yes this map is simply applied to the sword guard using the section in material attributes I spoke to you about earlier.

well... I've learned that modelling good looking tree stumps and trunks is not quite as easy as it sounds. I'll post an update later today or early tomorrow.

ok - here's the stump that the sword will lean on. I will probably alter the top slightly and maybe change the texture.

ok, I have altered the top slightly and changed the texture.

I scanned an old decaying plank of wood (family thought i was nuts) and assembled myself a texture using several different scans. I should probably also make a corresponding bump map because it looks a little 'flat' at the moment. Anyway, I like this one MUCH beter than the last testure (perlin noise I believe it was).

oh wow, that texture is looking awesome. did you have to change alot after scanning it in, or just stitched the differant scans together?

I had two different sections scanned of the same piece of wood. Because both scans were long and skinny I had to place the images next to each other several times for the texture... without it looking repetative user added image . This was a little time consuming as I had to copy and paste bits, smooth the image transitions, erase sections of layers and colour correct the separate pieces to look right next to each other. I ended up with about 25 layers!

I also scanned the top end of the rotting plank and built a texture for the top of the stump to make the grain of the wood look like... well... the grain of wood user added image .

Well, now I've bumped out the texture on the stump a bit for more 'real looking' lighting on the the surface. I also put some blood and some runes on the blade.

I rendered without the grass this time because it is faster... and I'm only rendering to see the sword anyway. I will make the ground texture soon and post a pic of it with the grass.

Really starting to come together. THe tree texture looks great!. Everything looks really good, but my only critique would be the gold on the handle. I would recomend downloading the silvershader (towards the bottom) at Highend3d. You can change the colors to gold (regular color and specular color) and its almost photorealistic. Just my 2 cents. Nice work,
