Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Are you talking about smoothing normals or smooth mesh? (if its not built for smoothing, you'll get craptastic results). I'm so curious, did you use the sculpt tool or did you push and pull those point individually?:x because if you did the latter, you're a mad man, a mad man!! Well no not really since the geo isn't really that dense, I just felt like being a dork. Post a wireframe on shaded shot please. And for some reason when I look at this I think of an Assassin's Creed spoof :p

Normals, not mesh! I think... As in, smoothing that doesn't change the actual geometry, just how that geometry is rendered... BUT... I've gotta post this... hehehe...

Anyway, there is a wire after.

I used the sculpt... I'd be insane otherwise!

wait... in looking at my wire I discovered a most unfortunate truth...

Apparently, after sculpting, I must have smoothed mesh while keeping edges around... then deleted history... which means that each large box deformed there is actually 4 faces instead of one, each face planar to the others. That would, If I'm correct, cause issues with the normals smoothing... or whatever it's called (I'd love to know)

interesting...

i assume the white render is after you used the smoothing function

if you want to smooth edges select the edges,
hold shift
hold right click
and your option to do it right there in the context menu

alternatively you can do it the long way and smooth normals from the menu... umm... i'm going to hazard a guess and say it's in the Normal menu in the modelling menu set...

that's a "Ch" pronounced as a "K"

Ok. UVing... How do I set up uvs for geometry like this? See how you've got all this right angle geometry, etc... Thanks
