Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

@ oldhippie tom
no apologies necessary it's all taste related you can't argue taste.
What i meant with gold /silver texture is a 3cpo meets r2d2 kinda look
Your modeling looks good very rich in detail, but from what i remembered from the millenium falcon is that it looked like crap always seemed to have some sort of damage but was the fastest smuggler ship around so maybe add some damage in the model (dents/faserdamage etc)
and sorry to bring it up again I would paint the undamaged parts with a boit of a golden streak and where it's damaged make the specularity somewhat less and the color more silverly ,
because now it looks like a showroom model that never left the garage.
and again only my opinion.
Glad you've dropped that background image though LOL

the beautiful thing about most models that one would have alot of objects to represent details, is when textured there are not alot of placed where there is actual detail to be textured, Its normally either A, a solid color form one peice to the other, or B, at a place where a sharp color change woudl do well. atleast in my expirence anyway..

OK, I guess I am really messing up on it then, huh? I do appreciate you comments and I will try hard to implement you suggestions. I had hoped I had moved much further than it appears that I have and guess I should back up two steps and regroup. Well, ya know ya look at a project long enough and you see what you want.

I do appreciate the time and effort to look at my project. Thank you!!

Have a nice evening guys!!

legendofzombi, yes there is probably a lot that I would change. But really this is my first, well second really as the first was the competition, trying to do dirt mapping. I am likely to look very foolish in my attempt. But if I learn from it then it is a small price to pay!

I have worked on this too long and would like to finish it up. I am fooling around at making a landing bay scene and will hopefully be able to make the render look decent when it comes together.

Again, thanks for liking my beast, she has left scars on me!!

Dave, I am not giving up. I have struggled with this too long and put too many hours in the modeling so I could try to learn it.

Dango kind of pointed me in the right direction. I have been like an Old Hound Dog and believe that it is the HDR that is bringing in the red hue. Nothing I use in the texture is red, basically shades of Grey and Black. I have carried on, but I will struggle to the end and learn all that I can along the way. Did I mention that it is FUN also!!

Tom, perhaps you might concider using a mel script for star field generation or solar system generation on ....eh..what are they calling highend3d now days? creative cash or something?

a thought....user added image

i am glad to hear that you are going to push on through..
I learned a long time ago, back in the days when i though that a card board box needed to have 1mil polys and that having modeled my first Compact Disk i was a master, you learn more from the screw ups then you do the successes, one cannot tell you what to fix on a perfect model....get my drift mate?

Hammer, I use 2 light that are .ies and the HDR. I did a RGB test and it showed that the HDR was adding alot of red. I appreciate you looking at and thinking of what may be the answer. I am always open to suggestions, I do hope that you all know that!! I am just trying to learn something that pleases me so.

legendofzombi, I am at 1,031,00 now and starting on the Landing Bay. I have been very lucky so far and the computer still renders it at a fair rate. We will see what transpires with the Landing Bay. Yes, I certainly do get you drift!! HaHaHa!! I would not change the wisdom of age for the vigor of youth for anything. The road was too long the first trip! I am sure you get that, huh?

Dave, I did not mean to pass over you comments on asking the kids for suggestions. In what we do here we are on a level that is ageless. Yes, it is being old that hopes I get a liltle consideration, but we are all learning and the table is level. I always hope for honest suggestions and help! I think I had heard a phrase 'I am smart enough to know there are MANY things I do not understand'.

I have had some wine and rambled enough. Thank you for your patience!!

Good evening everyone!! It is 7pm and I have had a couple glasses of wine, so I will not speak much. This render finished just a minute ago and wanted to share it. I have gotten the red out, according to the eyedropper sampler I can use in the render window. But you guys with your color perception will be the judges of that. I struggled for the last couple of day on the red hue I was getting. Tried many things, but I found the easiest answer was to change the color of the lights (16 lights) to compensate for the red in the scene. I added more green and blue to the lights an was able to get the colors to balance. Not an ideal answer by any means, but at least it gave me this render. Never did figure the answer!!

I hope to do more to the landing bay and make it darker in the final render. But I am anxious to finish this up!

Hope all are fine and have a smile!!!

Tom

Mate i think you have the shading and lighting spot on, agreed not the most vaunted solution, but it works..
I will say if i might, you might want to either in your textures, Add a bit more white saturation, or decrease the saturation of the darker colors, hard to saw which. but Just a bit more white in the hull i think over all, to bring out the darker areas.

legendofzombi, I thank you once again for taking the time to look at my project. I have taken your advice and added more white, think I may have missed a couple objects. Let me know if I did it too much, ok?

And have to tell you while I was changing the color of the ship, the song 'Whiter Shade of Pale' by Procol Harum came to mind and I laughed!! Thanks!!

Here is a link to the change:

Now, back to my coffee and a smoke!

P.S. Looks as if I have some creasing on the front 2 Pylons where the bottom half comes together with the top.
