Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

I have seen the space pilot in use by someone using Inventor guys and it works a lot better then you would think. It looked clumsy and awkward to me as well at first glance.

Just a note I have tried to use my wacom in place of the mouse on many occasions and I still cannot use it. Even in photoshop just the other day I was trying to draw over a screen grab and mark regions and I just gave up and drew lines with the mouse. Just drawing a freaking arrow head at the end of a line is a 5 minute exercise for me on the wacom! lol

Well after a day and a half it's becoming more natural, my left hand now reaches for the Spacepilot instead of the keyboard.

It does take some getting used to but on the plus side zooming in and out is far more accurate and the hotkeys are all placed around the main shuttle.

So far so good.

Here's a little more progress:

Clean - very clean geometry, good work!! Looking forward to the rest

Just a quick recap on the wacom thing. A friend of mine uses the pen all the time in maya for everything!! The only time I use the pen in Maya is for painting weights or PFX. Its just easier, the only thing is the navigation, rotations are fine but zooming in and out with the middle button on the pen is tricky lol - I always use the mouse LOL. I'm left handed, but the mouse is used with my right so its just a quick flick with the mosue then back again. Advantage......me

Hi Jay & Dave,

Thanks for the comments, much appreciated.

I'm really getting the 3D mouse thing now, it definitely suits my workflow.

Here is a wire for Dave:

Mate....bloody nice and neat geo.....I like the construction feel you have going here. Nice use of angles and symmetry. Looks like a viewing platform? Like a Control point?....Good stuff man...

More progress in between jobs.

Got a little more detailing such as wires and screw heads but that's about it. The reference I found was for a navy signaling light which Hermes did not have so I'm not following it verbatim. Bridge detail modeling next.

Very good clean work. Glad to see you are still pushing forward on this. There was a bit of a lull in the action.

Thanks for the kind words.

It had to take second place to paying work, been really busy which is good but hopefully I can get more done now things have died down a little.

Searchlight modeling pretty much done, just UV's and texturing to do.

Great stuff! Those cables look pretty thick. That would be a bit strong to rotate the spot up and down. Is that modeled by reference?

Thanks for your comments. Much appreciated.

The searchlight is a combination of references from the era. None of them had the wiring in place but from research the 1920's wiring was single core copper with a rubber insulator covered in a woven cloth outer. The diameter of the cable is around 8mm. I am assuming that when the searchlight was rotated up and down the cables moved freely up and down the centre column.

Here is a modern replica of the type of wiring.
