Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Looking really good bro..
I have to ask though
Did you draw inspiration from Pod Racers, and either a Speeder bike or a swoop for this thing?..cuse i see elements fomr all three in it...

Either way..i'm loving it...
Whats the poly count so far?

Hey Guys Thanks

tick: Oh yes!! Its the only way...

acid: Thank you

G: Yes, Yes and Yes! But not originally, the influence was from those old racing planes, I posted an image on here early on in the thread, as they are all engine and pure power. The detail ideas came from the aforementioned star wars vehicles, thats where I got the idea for the 'luggage' on the hood - from a speeder bike (have a look on the rear of one next time you come across it) As for poly count, I dont know, the fuselage is a subd atm so that will be in the hundreds, I'll check tonight and let you know

Cheers
Jay

Awesome! This thing has turned out great! I really like the overall style and flair of it. I'm not a huge Star Wars fan (especially after the new Episodes), but this thing has definite appeal. It's got some great detail packed into there, too.

As far as the exhaust issue, I think it'd be cool if you had some huge exhaust pipes coming from underneath and out to the rear. It'd kinda change up the style, and give it a more aggressive more. The only issue would be the heat dissipation by the rider.

Hi Eric

Thank you. I give Star Wars a chance the designs are so damn original, everyone else has just followed suit LOL, we probably wouldnt be usuing Maya if it werent for those guys at ILM either

Im still debating over the exhausts, I already have the vents there, so I may just run one big flat exhaust on the underside. though Im not one to go into technicalities really as far as heat disipitation is concerned, as long as it looks good then Im happy

Thanks again, will update asap

Hey Jay - don't know how I missed this one - this is looking great - I really like the shape of the main body, all the stuff that's going on underneath and the fins at the front...er...I like it all! Well, except for maybe the survival pack strapped on top, which just seems a bit out of place there, but that's just me.

Good work!

Hey Arran

Thanks. As for the pack on the top, sometimes a bit of random thrown in the mix can work...or not LOL

Just a small update on the vehicle with its color scheme. Ive been doing uvs on this and as simple as the shape looks, it was a complete mutha to do. I find heads kids play to do over this. Anyway the body, fins, engine, seat and dash are 1:1 whereas the smaller intricate stuff will be automapped with some decent tiled textures

Amazing stuff as always Jay

Small suggestion for you... Maybe the front end could do with a communications antenna? A bit like what's on the front of Airforce jets etc. Might look nice mounted on 1 side of front end, facing forward. It would help break-up the overall symmetry of the design and give it a slight industrial feel?

Just a thought m8...

Keep it up!

Thanks guys

leonlabyk: Thankyou, I always draw my stuff first to get an idea of the look of the vehicle, whether it needs panels on the body work, then for texturing I use alot of reference material to get what Im after, in this case the 'used universe' look of Star Wars always helps, they have their stuff down to the letter in that area, then its a case of finding nice metal textures or creating custom brushes ( Ive used only brushes atm) then just set to work in Photoshop. I'll overlay some metallic textures last, most likely a hammered aluminium for this one, adding scratches, dirt and dust at the end.

Tiddles: Thank you, I like that idea, tbh I was debating an antennae at the front and one just behind the headrest on the top, wherethe cylindrical object is.

Cheers for now
