Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Thanks user added image.

Side rant: I've been getting crashes, even though I try avoiding major history buildup etc and I'm still in the modeling phase so it's not like I'm making weird and experimental connections and junk. Maya can be such a drama queen.

Don't know which version of Maya you are running ( maya 2012 crashed a miljon times a day with me), it could also be that you have to delete your preferences... hope you don't lose any work because of those dumb crashes user added image

I don't think I'll need proxies since its a beach backdrop. An yeah I did lose work but its behaving a better now.

---------------

Rolling through the checklist, getting the larger pieces knocked out(still need to make a sofa). The rack needs to be populated with some other pieces before I start duping moving stuff around. The chassis there now was duped to "pretty" up the rack for test rendering.

whoa, scrolling past the wireframe of the chassis is so dizzying!
its almost like watching an animation of something scaling up
the poly count must have shot up heaps

Nice work Genny...
Dave: Are you kidding? Who wouldn't want their own rackmount render farm. Actually, it would be pretty hot and noisy. Maybe you should get a cooled cabinet or something for it to go in user added image (sorry I haven't read every post in this thread, so I don't know what you're planning ultimately)

Oh, I see your original plan now, a whole room for the rackmount, very sweet. And yeah I have to agree with Dom, Windows?? Of course I'm running windows now, but this is a dream office, I'd say Linux where everything runs perfectly and I don't have to mess with any config files. user added image

first time we built our farm it was on the floor the rest of the staff.........big mistake, we moved it into the garage the following week

I'd say Linux where everything runs perfectly and I don't have to mess with any config files

I'm I still dont get the big deal other than the fact that you can get a free linux os we run windows fine on our farm and it has never had problems for a year now and I dont remember messing with any config files biggest problem was to get a farm that actually worked we ended up settling on backburner 2008

ooh Genny great modelling so far

@ Chirone

To be honest I'm not keeping track, I'm getting a bit carried away so I'm going to have to ease off the detailing from now on (on some things anyways).

Yeah what Stwert said, renderfarms are awesome. Lol Raphael I could only imagine the disruption and frustration. Rackmount rooms are nice and all but I just can't take the cold for too long user added image

I'm not completely happy with it but I have to keep moving.

That is very awesome. I worked in a small windowless room with ~10 computers and a rackmount with ~3 units and no possibility of A/C. It was ridiculously hot in the summer.

you know... I just noticed something... your dream office is next to water (and this will apply to murambi too) which means you're in trouble when/if there's a tsunami.
but I can't help but see the scene in battle star galactica where balter's house is wiped out by the explosions

sorry.. that was quite the random observation...

The rack looks great Gect. I'm curious how many polys it is. I modeled an instrument rack once and even though it's hard surface modeling, it nearly killed my computer.

My god why? I'm surprised stuff didn't start malfunctioning :/

@ Chirone

I love water so I'll take my chances user added image even though the Caribbean doesn't see that kind of action as far as I know.

@ThexDuke
Thank you user added image

@ Perfecto

Thanks! It's around 2.6mil polys. I wuv veiwport 2.0 <3

Things did start malfunctioning (including me)... one of the iMacs died. It was at a university, and they wouldn't let us have more (or more properly suited) space. I think they're looking into distributed university based cloud computing now.
