Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

OK. Time for an update. I've been deciding on how to finish up the bird and will post some new shots of it soon. In the meantime, heres a bit more work on the rider. Just a few straps and buckles and a bit more texturing to go on him. This render includes a specular pass using an inverted grayscale copy of the metal texure ...

Good Job Dave!

Perhaps a little more shine on the armour, just a bit though, but other wise great job. Look forward to the bird

Later dude

It looks great to me. I think the armor is good the way it is, with a old and dirty look. the only thing I suggests it's you make his lenses translucent. Congratulations by now!!!

Hey Jamauri - Heres how I'm laying out the wing for my birdy. I used pictures of hawk wings then simplified the design and tweaked it to suit my needs (I hope). I'm going to work on some alpha channel stuff after work tonight so I'll post another update later. Your wings look much more graceful than mine, but then your character is an angel after alluser added image

Jay- I think you may be right. This is the first time I've really done any metal texture so I'm trying everything out and doing test renders 'til my computer is gasping for breath. This is also the first time I've made custom brushes in photoshop to paint textures. I honestly had no clue how fun it could be to try and create rust and such.

Thank you t1ck135, THX1138, Gamester, Mayafreak3 and Jamauri (I will work on texturing the googles!) for your encouragement. I appreciate it!

Looking good, Dave. In fact, the structure is exactly the same. The only difference is that you're using a catoonish approach, as I'm trying to make mine look as real as possible. I used references of more "calm" birdies, like doves. I'm impacient to see your model complete. It rocks, man!

Great wings! user added image

did you reshape them between the two photos or have you used alpha on the edges to round them (a guess as I've never alpha'd before)?
When the guy dies in the game you could have a smaller set for him user added image

Can't wait to see it all together

Joed8349- Thank you for your kind comments!!

T1ck135- I did a bit of resizing and some minor tweaking of the feather verts to get the shape where I was happy with it, but the rounded look is from creating a transparency map.

I've made some color adjustments and added in a bit more detail. Now its on to the rest or the birdie. Time to finish this beast!
