like... i usually use plane or torus primative with a lambert with incandesence on full or very high. Somtimes i apply a texture to break it up a bit but thats all, a bit like using a shaped area light without needing sampling settings user added image.

Can you post an example please? I didn't understand how it's supposed to help me in my project?
Thanks,
Benny

He's saying don't rely on FG, instead get the lighting juuuust righty then use pieces of geo with incandescence or textures in the incandescence so simulate an environment so they show up in the reflections of the objects that are in the shot. Or as I said before you can use the dome with a surface shader and a texture in the out color. Either method you don't have to use FG. But if you do want to use FG, you're going to have to be reasonable 1 GB RAM running an OS + running Maya (you're probably going to have to close Maya to render this) + MR calculations just does not compute. I say, take the res down to 320 x240, tone down the samples on the AA, the shadows, the refractions etc, and maybe even possibly make some stand in geo then test from there. Don't rush this because you're getting bored or feel like you must maintain this thread and just finish it, because you're going to move on to another project and not solve it and bump into these issues again, I can promise you that.

OK, I guess I'll take some more time on that one...
How do I render a scene with Maya closed?

Trying to assign a file texture to the out color of a surface shader consistently causes runtime errors user added image

Yep,
Is that what's called batch render?
I remember reading somewhere there are some things it can not do... could this be the problem in this case?

A batch render is a render that just does a batch (say all the frames for animation)

Rendering like what you did of form the command line just frees up system resource. The render should be based on the scene settings in the render globals form the last save.

... I just thought so because the process in the task manager is called mayabatch.
When I render a scene from within Maya with the same render settings I get a MUCH better quality...

Oh cr*p, I've just seen for the first time after a few happy years a BSoD when I tried to render through Maya...
Not so long ago the computer stopped while rendering(twice) and I had to restart it. I guess the BSoD is an epilogue.

Here is a comparison:
Maya closed | Through Maya
user added image

Oh well, No comparison because my computer just stopped twice more while trying to render that scene through Maya.
This is getting on my very last nerves :angery: :headbang:
Any ideas?

:attn:
Reinstalled Maya, this time with sp1, and I managed to render that scene:

I'll try another render with Maya closed now to see if there's any difference...
(Edit: no, no difference...)

Thanks Genny, I think I know what's the problem - It probably didn't use Mental Ray for the render...

I've got another problem though - I can't use the cmd to render because
Code:
'render' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
The tutorial doesn't say anything about that and I tried to follow it word by word...
Do I need to import something first or something like that?
Help please,
Benny

At what point do you get the problem, if yo open the cmd and type render -h you should get all the flags. But I dont know where you get the problem

at any point in which I try to use 'render' command...

I doesn't make seance to me that using 'render' in cmd will work just like using 'ping' for instance... maybe I just don't know how windows works well enough though...
