Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

er... 3:30 in the morning - just trying to get to grips with hair. ha ha - this is what happened when i made my first attempt.

my next attempt was very flock of seagulls....

this one is getting there...still need to change the angle, but it's time for bed!

Well i don't know how the hair looks like on a fly to be honist.

And now looking at some google images, that second hair render looks spot on my friend!

is that hair or fur?

I guess your hair doesn't need to follow wind and movements, so fur would me more suitable to use.

It's paint fx hair - i had a play with fur, but it seemed a bit dense. I'm going to have another play with it when i do his body.

very nice work aaron I really like your modeling style it seems very efficient and clean. I'm impressed.

so you mentioned you were modeling things at work does that mean your technically "looking" like your working?

ok - have been pushing on with this fly, but not having much luck.i used fur for most of his back and then added paint fx eyelashes for the bristles on his back. I used the paint effects mesh quality tool to lessen the geometry. i wanted to render in mental ray, so I converted them to polygons, but every time i render the screen goes blank and i get this in the script editor -

// Error: (Mayatomr) : unexpected internal exception during scene rendering, please report //
// Info (Mayatomr): Aborted //

i've turned off ray tracing and set the scanline to rapid in mental ray.

i then read that you don't have to convert to polygons now as mental ray can now render paint effects, but i still haven't had any luck.

does anyone have any ideas? user added image

That error message isn't very helpful...

Try deleting everything and do a render. If that works, add for example the body and do a new render. If it still works, add another part until you know what's causing the problem.

I thought it was the paint fx messing me up, but i think it was actually cos I had some of my fur feedback grouped with some curves.
