This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Feather texture update. I'm about half way through with laying down the 2d feathers on the head. I'm keeping each row of feathers on separate layers so I can fully adjust how they look. Its getting there! I Would love to get any suggestions you folks might have. I am learning tons on this project!

Are you adding individual feathers onto the body or is that some groovy way of doing texturing to make the feathers look raised? (I have no idea about the techniques such as displacement, normals etc yet).
either way the detail is definately building up to make this look even better than it already was user added image

i like it alot, really cool style!

some crits:
- textures are too grayed out for my opinion
- need highlights

T1ck135- Nope. Nothing groovy going on here. Just some extra polys making up those feathers on the breast. I've made some fairly big changes to the head feathers as the obvious separation between the head and larger neck feathers was really bugging me. I'll post when I've got more done on the body too. Cheers!

Sklaventreiber- Thanks for stopping by! Yeah, the desaturated look is something a like to do. Its a conscious effort to stay away from pure color or pure black and white. Its just a belief I have that they should be reserved for making a visual impact or punctuation. Plus in looking at real life birds the larger birds are the less colorful they tend to be (in general). As far as highlights go, they will soon be on the way. I've just been concentrating on color and using good ol' Lamberts.user added image

Awesome man. One of the best bits of texturing I've seen, very clean and crisp. Keep up the good work!

Yep, definately an improvement on the head feathers, they look far better user added image
The textured feathers around the eyes help to remove the greyed out effect too.

Sweet texture maps man user added image

I really like the feathers around the eye area. Nice render also. Its cool how you can see the soft shadows the feathers make.

I'm glad you guys seem to think things are looking better!

Utpal- I don't have any real website but I'll let you know as soon as I do. In the meantime, keep an eye out for me here! Thanks, buddy!

The bird is nearly finished. Laying out all those little feathers was an almost zen-like experience . I'm currently working on bringing out the feather texture a bit more with highlights and shadows to help give things form and separation. The bird's feet are next and then I will focus once more on the rider and gear. I am considering adding some prehistoric style finger/claws to the bird. I think they would fit the character.

looks great man, it just looks as if everything is made of the same material, but i think highlights will clear this up.

Hi Sklaventreiber! Yes, My model is completely covered in Lamberts. Soon I will define highlights using spec maps, Blinns and maybe a Phong user added image

Looking at this render again, the armor just bugs the hell outta me and the saddle is way too dark. I believe I will take a more shiny worn metal approach with rivets and perhaps some brass/gold accents.
