Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.
For the next learning curve. Photoshop and texturing. I thought I'd practice my texturing on the least visible section, the butt end of the plane aka the tail wheel.
I'm new to texturing so all comments, critique and advice will be highly appreciated.
Is that a bump map I see on the tyre, only just visable try increasing the differant values but you do not want a straight white or black try keeping to dark grey and light gray...............dave
Edit: it could be your lighting on your bump map set your light with the shadow at a angle to show of the bump
I agree mate.....its hard when the puter hasnt got the grunt. You can try what dave suggested to me a while back. Split your model up into sections...and export them as single files...ie...back wheel, fuselage, front cowling...then texture them in each project and combine at the end...
With the PS...I agree with dave..though start in straight black and white, when you are happy I then use the colour replacement tool....or you could use the colour wizard then use the flood tool to change the black and white to shades of grey.
Keep up with it mate...it will be a learning curve...and a long one.

"A Darkness at Sethanon", a book I aspire to model some of the charcters and scenes
For the performance issue I have grouped the different sections into separate layers and am selectively displaying the layers. The problem is not so much the size of the model but the number of polies my poor machine can display at a time and still be responsive. Will a graphics card upgrade help?
For the bump maps in PS I already started with pure black and pure white in multiple layers. I play around with the opacity of the layers to get shades of grey.
I will make the lettering a little bit more pronounced with the next render. I have to adjust the textures anyway. I forgot to correct the gamma settings.
I THINK...though I probably am wrong...even though you dont display the other groups the machine will still try and compute the hidden layers????...Im not sure on this one.....
Try the replace colours mate...easier....PSD files are brilliant arent they LOL

As I understand it a graphics card does all the view port stuff rendering is done with your cpu and memery, so a graphics card upgrade might be your choice also look into updating your drivers....................dave
A small update. Progress has been slow. I did get a model kit to help with the bump maps and the decals. The photoshop learning curve has been slow and frustrating.
Looking good Pixal
Im glad you went for that mottled look, if you have any trouble in photoshop or need to know how to do some thing just post here...............dave
Thanks Dave. I'll shout when I get stuck.
I decided to go for the color scheme of "Black 8". Bullet will be chuffed to know that there will be a spiral on the spinner.
LOL...a spiral eh?? well done. With the mottle look you have is nice going. The only thing I see is the dark patches you have need a little more smudge I think...I could be wrong. Looking good though mate
