Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Crae McShae, Star of the New Movie - Identity Crisis

This is the best I've done so far as a Mayan and all I can say is... I even impress myself. user added image It's polygonal and smoothed but only for my picture here I unsmoothed it so I can do more work to him soon. Rendered with Mental Ray. Alrighty, talk to me people! user added image

Good start... bring down the neck area a little bit... it slopes up to much... keep going...

Thanks Kurt. I have the neck a little shorter now and I'm going to work on either the hands or the legs next. Haven't decided yet. :/

Here is the actual file I've created. I have added a "hand" and after smoothing him out, he looks great. I did, however, try to add joints to his arm to see if I could get the arm to move. Once I moved it, all heck broke loose around his armpit... it looked like shite! So now, I beg of you, can someone tell me if this file will actually work - did I do a good job with this thing or do I need to start over. :/ Picture of said model follows this post... BTW, it's a polygonal model.

First of all, you're gonna want to finish him before rigging.

If you're just wanting to test it out, you'll more than likely need to paint the weight maps if you're using smooth binding and adjust individual vertex weighting using lattices or whatnot if you're using rigid binding.

Truth is, this can take some time, and if the model isn't finished, you'll just have to start over with the rigging once it is.

One thing you might find help with is if you post your wireframe, we can comment on how deformable it most likely will be.

Michael, dude... my man! user added image

Thanks so much. I was starting to get this feeling I'd have to model my character all over again. And believe me, for my first try, this has definitely been a bee-yotch! :p I've included the wireframe of Crae in this post (persp view) . Let me know if I need to change views. Thanks for your help, Mr. M. Greatly GREATLY appreciated! I can sleep easier tonight knowing I won't have to start over. LOL!

Hey Russell, nice start you have there. I know what you mean by impressing yourself, until you actually do some things yourself they can seem unreachable. I think getting over that first hump is a big step in the right direction and gets you closer to mastering what you want to do.

I don't know if you have seen this tutorial before but it is one of the best I have seen and I am using it to help me out as I model my first person. (My WIP can be found here: https://forum.simplymaya.com/showthre...threadid=10817)

Here is the tutorial:
https://www.3dtotal.com/ffa/tutorials...c/joanmenu.asp

I take a look at the geometry used in the tutorial to get a sense of where I should head when I get stuck. I have followed this, step by step, for my hand and my ear.

Good luck and keep up the good work!

Based on the wireframe I submitted, does he look deformable? :surprised

Russell

BTW, I'm going to see Mr. Ron "Tater Salad" White here in Sioux Falls. I'm so excited!!! He's a stand-up comic appearing in the "Blue Collar Comedy Tour" movie. Check it out, y'all! user added image

He's pretty funny. user added image

Your wireframe could use some tweaking. you want the lines from armpit to the top of the shoulder to kind of "seashell" outward.

Sooooooooo.... LOL! You're saying he's deformable... LOL! Seriously, you're basically saying to lower the shoulder a bit, maybe even angle the shoulder a bit? How do you menan by "seashell"? user added image I'm a little slow. LOL! BTW, that concert last night ROCKED! user added image Hilarious! Larry the Cable Guy is coming here in July! I'm REALLY psyched now! And there's going to be another "Blue Collar Comedy Tour" movie filming in July as well. YEA!
