HDRI in Maya 6.0

Can anyone tell me what the function of the "Image Based Lighting" section of Mental Ray?

I have been experimenting with HDRI using HDR images as Ambient Lighting files applied to a Sphere, rendering with Final Gathering.

This works great, but I'm just curious as to what this new "feature" is I just found and how it's used.

IBL will elimanate many things you are currently doing. It also provides more accurate calculations and you can see the HDR in the viewport. I recommend you to go through the help files to unserstand all the options for the IBL.

Thanks Roach! I read all about the IBL and am very impressed with the control and less steps as opposed to my "long way".

I've enclosed a test image that I did...
