smoothing polygonal objects

Let's take a polygonal sphere. now let's pick a circle of faces at one of the poles and extrude them (keep faces together). Now we have some kind of a cylinder popping out of the sphere. I want to smooth the side polygons of the cylinder without increasing the polygon count. In 3D studio max it's called "smoothing groups" but i couldn't find anything like that in maya.
Does anyone know how to do that?
help please...
