Introduction to Maya - Rendering in Arnold
This course will look at the fundamentals of rendering in Arnold. We'll go through the different light types available, cameras, shaders, Arnold's render settings and finally how to split an image into render passes (AOV's), before we then reassemble it i

empty surface?

hi, I was just trying to render a frame, with bump map, raytracing, and motion blur. it comes out fine, except there's no motion blur, and it gives me a purple message in the corner reading:

// Warning: TrenderPolyShape::sample: mesh 'PolyShape' delivered an empty surface. //
What does this mean? is this why there's no motion blur? how do I fix it?
thanks in advance.

i have no idea I'm afraid! I've never seen that before. Maybe try deleting the history on the piece of geo and see if that helps. Failing that can you rebuild it fairly easily?

I switched to a machine with more ram and it's fine now, but I'm finding that 3d motion blur is being weird, no matter how many samples I put down, everything comes out wrong, grainy, and the lighting looks changed, but only on the parts that are being blurred. I'll try post pictures in the next post

This may sound lame but you're fighting 2 issues.

1.) Maya software motion blur is weak. Not much you can do about that.

2.) Motion blur in reality often does darken images, especially highlights. Take a look at some film footage and you'll see what I mean. If you want bright highlights while it's being blurred, you can increase your lighting, or tweak your shader.

You're not doing anything wrong, that's just the way it is... at least from my experience.

what do you suggest for motion blur? I just applied all my color maps, bump maps, and displacement maps, and now it won't even do ANY motion blur, unless I unsmooth him. thanks in advance.

well, I got it to do it again, by choosing a smaller file type for my displacement, but for a while, it would do the motion blur for the unsmoothed, and do nothing for the smoothed, no blur at all. but now that I've figured that out, I rendered out a few frames to see how it looked in motion, and he flickers! instead of being constantly dark like in the above example, he flickers from light to dark, in a matter of a few frames. erg, is all I have to say...

What kind of motion blur are you using... 2d, 3d?

I'm using 3d, 2d kept blurring stuff that wasn't supposed to be, and kept putting weird black outlines around stuff...

ok, I hope I've come to a solution. I'm rendering out, the T. rex motion blurred, without any shadows, then I'm rendering out the shadows on his body, separately, and the ground shadow, I'll then put them together in shake. I've yet to test it, so we'll see how that works out

ok, that didn't really work, and I just tried doing it in mental ray, but it gives me a purple message saying that the shapes are not equivalent, and that no motion vectors were produced. gar, this frustrating.

ok, I've gotten to a point where I'm satisfied (thus far), except on the last three frames, no matter how many times I rerender, these weird splotches keep showing up and only on the even fields. does anyone know why this is? or how to fix it? thanks in advance
