shapes shapes shapes

Im experimenting with polygon modelling and i dont mind telling you that im finding it a struggle to say the least. I have made many mistakes because i dont think i understand fully where to start from with regards to creating the initial form of the objects. The major problem im having now is that the object seems best created from a sphere and elongated but one side has a different angle of fall-off from the other and i cant discover how to create this difference without making it look scruffy. I have tried the "hammer tutorial" process but it seems to fold and mess up my topology too much.
I have attached a sketch of the side-angles of the object i wish to create. Any guidence with my poor process would be totally appreciated. thank you
im having image upload issues. it asks for an http address. hats that about
