Bulging Muscles and Sliding Skin: Deformation Systems for "Hellboy"

Paul G. Thuriot will talk about his work on "Hellboy" while he was at Tippett Studio. They created ranges of realistic motion and deformations with a fast-solving, semi-interactive, and physically based muscle and skin system that fit into our existing animation pipeline.

Paul G. Thuriot is an Associate CG Supervisor at EA Worldwide, where he is applying advanced film techniques to games. Prior to joining EA, he was the Puppet (a.k.a. Creature TD) Supervisor at Tippett Studio. During his time at Tippett, he worked on cinematic projects including the Blockbuster "Carl and Ray" commercials, Blade 2, and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. His most recent project at Tippett was to create the unnatural twists of the demon creature "Sammael" and the fully naturalistic and nearly anatomically correct "Abe" for Hellboy. For this project, Paul has been nominated along with other members of his team at Tippett for a 2005 VES Award.

Employing Maya's MEL and API coding in everyday tasks, he's helped design and implement many proprietary pipeline and workflows including its dynamic muscle and skin plug-in systems. Paul holds a BA in drawing and painting and a Masters in computer animation. He has presented two Maya Masters Classes and has taught many courses on advanced character setup and MEL scripting.
