Worse than a Newbie question

Greetings this is my first post here.

I'm exploring getting software to do animations and I don't have a clue where to even start.

I've been doing graphics for many years in the print industry. I'm so old school I actually remember linotypes and we actually hand drew graphics, used air brushes and shot and stripped our own films and halftones user added image

So any advice about what kind of software would be appropriate for exploring and learning animation techniques and such would be really appreciated

Thanks
T

Slobbermonster? Anyway...

As traditional 2D person myself I think I can understand what you're going through. I've settled on Maya because it is widely used and it's what was available at work user added image

Many of the major players have free learning editions or demo versions to help you get a feel for them (and to hopefully convince you to buy them). Get you hands on as many of these as you can and see which suites you best. I am not one of die hards that insist program a is better than program b. Which ever program allows you to be the most productive and facilitates your creativity, than that is the best program for you.

For Maya:

For Cinema 4D:

For 3DS:

For Lightwave (no free version, but video features):

I think you can request a CD or least you used to be able to

For Blender (FREE):

For Shade:

Welcome to the world of 3D... enjoy the ride.

Slobbermonster is what I call my dogs, they are 130 pound couch potatos. Thanks for all the info that looks interesting.
