Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 1
This course will look at the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. We'll look at what makes a good model in Maya and why objects are modeled in the way they are.

A little game of chess...

Hey, I'm working on a game of chess. I'm planning on trying some stuff with rendering and maybe a nice animation. I'm still like learning a lot, so might not be top notch, but I'm trying user added image.
I'll try to work on it regularly and update this user added image.
Here's some progress on the modells of the pieces:

Nice work so far. Just a few crits... The king & queen are generally taller than the other pieces. Your rooks, especially look too tall in relation to the other pieces. The knights might be a bit more horse shaped. Finally, the scene might benefit from an additional light or two to fill in detail in the shadowed areas.

Keep up the good work.

Nice work Daan,
I agree with mhcannon on the proportions of king & queen and the knights shape, but I assume these are because of you're own design/vision of chess pieces (inside info user added image ). Right?

BTW the chessboard needs to be rotated, so that the righthand tower is on a white surface (used to play chess user added image )

Ok, I here's some more progress. I changed some model proportions (thx mhcannon for the tips), and some chess-technical issues (huh angel user added image). I tink I'll remodel the knight seperatly, will work on that later.
Also I'm trying some things with rendering and all. As you can see I was messing around with some blinns user added image. Any C&Cs?

Ide say it looks pretty decent now. Might want to replace the brown with a cleaner looking color. The brown with the white looks wrong IMO. Ide say a shiny black, or a gray.

The horse still needs a little tweaking. And the king usually has a small Cross on the top section of it. But not always.

Are you planning on animating it?

Yeah I'm going to remodel the knight later, not satisfied yet. This one was just a quick version that I created because I wanted to see the complete scene.
And I don't know about the king; a lot of these pieces are quite abstract, ie the rook should look more like a tower, but I choose to simplify those details.
I think I'm gonna make some kind of animation yes, haven't thought about that much.
