Well I tried to do that, but the glow is just never ever the way a lightsaber-blade should look like.

Oh, may want to work on that a little. Can you post a pic of 'what went wrong' (hey thats the name of a blink song)? Also, can you post what exactly is wrong with it? Not a big starwars buff myself, so I wouldnt know exactly what it is supposed to look like.

Well the thing is that the glow only "glows" when you
direct a light to it. But I guess a lightsaber is supposed to
glow even if it's dark...
So place a light inside the object? Doesn't work, then you have areas
with more intensive glow... :S

Did you use the glow option for the plasma part? Im not really a render buff either, but im sure you might be able to get what you want with mental ray or something.

Hmm, I think that sounds right. (note the "sounds", I pretty much have no idea what he means)

Oh, actually, I have heard of this. I have no idea how to do it but maybe do a tutorial search for 'light linking'. I would suggest the F1 button while in maya.

glowies
two ideas on how to do this:
One - there is an option in part of the attribute editor in maya to make a object glow. You can also 'hide' the source of the glow (so the glow-light is visible, but not the object that is doing the glowing). So you could create a simple cylinder, tell it to glow, tell the glow to 'hide source' and dink around with the color of the glow.
I think that should do it. I used it for laser bolts in a clip i did with maya legos.
Two. What I did was I used maya's built in lightning effect. A picture of the result is in my gallery at X4nd5r.deviantart.com. Basically, take two NURBS circles to bind as the ends of the lightning. Give it a spread very near zero (which means it won't go all jagged on you), then dink aroung with glow and light intensities - IPR's will be very handy here. Color can be tuned as well, and to adjust the difference between the inside center 'white' glow and the outer color, chand the radius of the lightning effect.
Leastways, I think that's how I did it. I'm close, if I haven't memorized it completely. Using a lightining one this way is also good for animating; although you'll have to key the intensity values to zero when the object is off, you can key the lightning's start and end U-values for the blade to 'lengthen' into activation.....
Anything else?

Lots less glow on the blade. I'll look up the settings i used when i made myself a lightsaber the other day.
btw, am i the only one who thinks a gripshift style on/off switch would work better on a lightsaber.
