Extrude face question, newbie

First off, just wanted to say how great this site is. I'm a long time member first time poster. Anyway, I'm working with the Ninja tutorial (which has been invaluable in my work at school), and I've made it to the ear. For some reason each time I extrude the faces in the outter ear lobe, not only do I extrude the faces, but also the edges. No big deal I thought; I'll just go in and delete all of the edges that had been accidentally extruded. Unfortunately, I think this draw back (the extra extruded edges) is restricting me from converting the ear into a Subd. I may just be completely off, and its something else I'm doing wrong, but if you guys have any advice, I'm all ears.

PS. I'm using Maya 6.5 Unlimited (if that makes a difference) user added image

Nevermind the second half of my last thread abotu converting to Subd, I think I might have come accross a solution. I think I had a funky number of random vertices, or edges so I have to comb through the geometry. As far as the edges thing goes I'm still perplexed.

So, you're extruding faces and edges at once?

I'm not sure if I'm misunderstanding the question, but perhaps make sure that Polygons > Tool Options > Keep faces Together is on.

If that's not the problem, perhaps you could post an image.
