Alpha Channels

I followed Michael Mikinley's tutorial on alpha channels in photoshop and my results aren't right. I'm trying to create a texture of long waving grass that will animate in a maya scene I am making. In photoshop, I painted the texture and then selected what I wanted to be invisible. When I select the alpha channel my selection turns red. Then I save it as a targa and load it in Maya and it doesn't work, I see the entire texture, even the selection I wanted transparent.

If I can figure out alpha channels, I will be able to create trees and other shrubbery to add to my scene. Please someone help me.
