This is my first attempt at completing a low poly game character. I have spent a couple of hours here and there on it, though the ears are really beginning to get the better of my patience. All C+C wanted, ie where could I improve my topology etc. I am currently using a facial reference.

I think the corner of the eye closest to the nose needs to be recessed more. In the profile view both corners of the eyes should be nearly aligned. Its a good start, some working on the edge looping is probably in order but I'll leave that for someone with more experience with edge looping.

Some of the polygons look unessacary in the wireframe shaded view. Can we get a render or maybe something that does not have wire?

Looking good for a first one user added image

Only thing I'd say (and I'm a noobie too) is to sort out the lines around the outer edge of the eye.
I'm not saying mine is right as its only my first solo head too but have a look at it on my thread to see what I mean - here

I think your ear is too upright and needs rotating so the bottom is further forward. Have a look at someones ear and you'll be surprised how angled back they are.
The vertical alignment of the ear looks too straight to me. Maybe a very slight outward angle from the top might help (in case you add some hair).

Other than that and the eye you just need to get rid of as many tris as possible user added image

Based on the front view, the eyes are too close together. As for the ear, in addition to a rotation, the face side of the ear needs to blend more to the head.

Thanks for the tips, I'll try and rectify them over the weekend. As for the ear, I haven't spent more than 5-10 mins on it, just generalising the shape first I am more after comments on the mesh and flow lines.
