Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

extrude more faces, cut/split polys.

The basis is the extrude cut and split faces as matt 4068 said.
You might also try creating different parts of your model separetly still using the cut/split and extrude and then using Polygons->Booleans->Union to add them all together. Also note that under Polygons->Booleans are Difference and Intersect which are also very usefull tools for modelling just create some poly boxes and try them.

Only one problem make note that after you do a boolean operation you may have excess edges and verts so you will probable have to go in and delete or merge them. If you want a vert to stay still whilein the merge get the vert you want gotten rid of select and hold the v key to snap it to the vert you want to stay still.
