Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Polygons are all made of "flat edges", or more accurately, by vertices (points) which form edges (lines), which in turn form faces, so you can only make them appear to be smooth from a distance by adding faces. Zoom into a polygon sphere, and you will know what I mean.

You might want to try working with NURBS.

additionally (might not be useful) you can play with:

edit polygons -> normals -> soften/harden

to play about with giving a slightly smoother look. In the options set to all smooth (180) just to see the changes.

what do you mean 'disfigures it'? are you keeping your polys to 3 or 4 edges per face? smooth should work fine. maybe show a pic of before and after smooth.

Also you might need more geometry with the polygon shapes . When you create a polygon shape, check for how many subdivisions you have.
The more subdivisions, the easier it is to smooth or "round out" the shape. For instance, if you make a cube and in the modeling menu, you go to polygons>smooth and the shape of the cube turns weird instead of turning into a sphere-like shape, it means you don't have enough subdivisions in your object. So when you create an object, make more geometry by either, starting with more subdivisions in the option box or simply adding them through edit polygons.suddivide.

So that might be the same case with the bevel problemas well.Then again It might be something else, but try that and see if it works.

I hope that helps

Thx for ur replies guys!!.. the subdivide worked a bit better but sometimes its stilldistorts a bit. with bevel i have tried to change settings but wen i do it goes crazy. by default it is a big bevel (so to speak) how to decrease this to make it realistic as noting in life is a completely flat edge an i have found leavin it catches the light and is not accurate
