This course will look at the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. We'll look at what makes a good model in Maya and why objects are modeled in the way they are.

some detail.

I will probably be creating a normal map or displacement map in ZBrush to use on a lower polygon model in Maya.

But this is a Maya modeling comp. Why use Z-Brush?
Is this fair on others? Mike?

the rules say ZBrush is allowed. It doesn't state HOW it is allowed.

I find it comical you are complaining because so many people use photoshop to do their "render" in a Maya contest. Depth of field, smoke, fog- all things that can easily be done in Maya and instead people use a photo editing program and not the 3D package they are competing with. At least with ZBrush it's another 3D program. So if you want to whine about what programs I'm using 1. read the rules and 2. address the fact that "rendering" in a non 3D package is a much bigger "problem."

What is the problem?

LRSDscout said he going to use the Zbrush model for displacement mapping onto a low poly model in Maya:
"I will probably be creating a normal map or displacement map in ZBrush to use on a lower polygon model in Maya."

>So what is the big problem?

Also, the rules should be updated to state what mtmckinley has explained in this thread about using Zbrush, and I agree with LRSDscout about the uses of Photoshop.

Nice model by the way.

Sorry I spoke, LOL.

Anyway the point of these comps. (I thought) was to help people learn Maya. Well that is my last point, I don't want to clutter this poor guys thread anymore. Maybe we should start a new thread somewhere to see what other people think?

BTW, great concept mate. I don't remember this game at all (maybe I'm too old, LOL).

honestly I was wondering about all the photoshop post-render stuff myself. I can make something hideous then completely recover it in photoshop, but for these challenges I'd rather get it all done in maya. Hopefully other people wouldn't try to just out and out cheat using photoshop.

What Alias did in their contests was require you to upload an image file rendered from Maya. A file touched up in Photoshop or other software will add code to the file that can be easily detected because software companies like to 'sign' their stuff. Even a JPG will have this code in it.

2 cents

Z-Brush goes along well with Maya I think. I am still learning it but from the images I've seen done with Maya/Z-Brush, it can really take your Maya Models (or any other of the 3d apps) to that "Next Level" of detail. Since it was listed in the programs available for use, I don't see any reason not to use all of your available resources.

Looks like a good start LRSDscout user added image
