Pixel aspect problems

Ok so I don't know if this is a deal with PS or maya, but my money is on maya. PS doesn't like non square pixel aspect ratios and tells you as soon as you open the file up (pixel aspect ratio correction is for preview purposes...) . However, I selected the 640X480 defaults in the render settings, rendered, then saved out. Maya says the aspect ratio is 1.33:1. Save the image as a .jpg, then again as a .tiff or targa.

When I open the jpg up, photoshop skews the image until I manually change the aspect ratio to "square." However, I open the same rendered image as a .tiff or targa and have no such troubles. What's the deal?

It's quite a fuss when I just want to save out some quick jpegs from maya.
