Surface turns black

Hi!

I'm just doing a car model tutorial. It all works exactly as the tutor shows in his tutorial except one thing: my front and backlights are black. I can't see any details (only if i select it i see the wireframe). I already tried "Set Vertex Normal" but it had no effect. Assigning a different material also didn't work. The only way I can make it showing details and turning back to gray is to add some lights and press 7. But in the tutorial there was never added a light, so it must be possible to solve it in another way.

Here are some screenshots:

Here is one with a bidirectional light:

Your using Maya 7 yes? It seems its more sensitive to flipped normal surfaces simply select your object and goto edit polygons -> normals -> reverse

Should sort it out

Hi!

I'm using Maya 6.5 and it remains black after reversing normals. Got another idea?

Hi!

I just tested the file on my other pc, there the headlight's aren't black but the left backlight is. The right backlight also looks normal (gray). I don't get that.

I can't upload the file, even the zip is about 400kb and that's too big for this forum.

thx,
m0m0

Hi!

Thank you very much, it really works now.

For all others who are interested: selecting and freezing transformations on it did it for me.

Hi!

Sry, I was too fast.

It only works with the back lights. Freezing transformations on the headlights doesn't change anything. Did it work for you on the headlights?

thx,

Hi!

The tutorial is GREAT, but I can't continue 'cause I'm stucked with the headlights. The plane over the headlights isn't the problem but the complex building behind it. It just doesn't want to change it's color, even after freezing transformations.

I'd really like to complete this tutorial, but with this ugly black headlights it won't look good when it's finished, so I'm still trying to make them turning gray. Have you got any more ideas?

thx,
m0m0

no your front light appears fine on mine all I can suggest is for you to re build the headlight or take a render and see how it looks normally the blackness disappers and it renders fine

Hi!

hmmm .. they were ok on my other pc too, but on my main one they are still black. I don't think that it's a graphic card problem cause this is the only thing that is black.
also the fact that only one backlight was black on my other pc astonished me, how can that be?

i just renderd the image (without rebuilding the headlights). in the render view they look ok (gray), but when I'm moddeling, they are still black. but I guess thats no big problem when they look fine in the final image.

thx for all your help
