Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 1
This course will look at the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. We'll look at what makes a good model in Maya and why objects are modeled in the way they are.

Those &*$^#& extra/hidden faces!

Hi, folks...

I'm using 6.5 and I seem to be having a problem I haven't had previously. When I extrude faces, I get hidden faces under whatever I'm extruding. I then have to go delete all of them, which is very time consuming. I think this all happens because vertices/edges aren't merged by default when I extrude. I know this because when I extrude several edges at once, I get heavy border edges along the extrusion (as opposed to clean geometry). I then have to merge vertices and/or delete extra faces every time I extrude.

Surely there must be a setting somewhere in "Preferences" I am missing, or some other relatively simple solution to my problem. In the past, I've been able to just extrude faces and edges without these problems. Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance!

Carry on...

I figured it out. The faces are planar by default and the "keep faces together" function is nicely hidden but there just the same (Polygons>Tool Options>Keep Faces Together).

Embarrassed but otherwise enlightened, I beg your collective pardon! :-)
