This course contains a little bit of everything with modeling, UVing, texturing and dynamics in Maya, as well as compositing multilayered EXR's in Photoshop.

Looking for Quadro/FireGL features or are GeForces/Radeons sufficient?

hehe, I did exactly the same. now i'm sat next to my girlfriend in the living room still modelling away while she does school marking etc user added image

I got a system last year with the following spec and it runs maya fine (though I haven't done any major high poly work or rendering yet):
pentium m 1.7gig
1 gig RAM
Mobility Radeon 9700 128meg
etc..

With £1200 you should be able to get something pretty nice now. Is it for portability or not though? If not then some of the heavier 17inch screen models with beefy gfx cards and irrelevant battery life would be your option. If portability is your option (like for me) then a decent speed cpu, good gfx card, decent battery life and the ability to add plenty more memory should be important.

I bought 'what laptop' for a few months before deciding - they have a good rundown of previously reviewed models (split by price) at the back.

bFlocking - a tool for Maya 8.5+ to generate flocking and swarming behaviours

The Acer Ferrari series are supposed to be very nice. Decent specs (AMD Turion 64, 1 gig RAM, X600 graphics card), and they weigh in at about £1200 (the top of the range is about £1299 I think).

I was going to get one, but I ended up with a different make (Medion), which isn't bad, although not suitable for 3D (SIS Mirage onboard graphics)

apple powerbook g4

www.apple.com

get a gig of ram, will run maya pretty well.

if your wanting windows

https://www.sagernotebook.com/index.html
is the cheapest for the dollar, only bad thing is they do not offer an option for quadro fx cards but they do have the 7800
buy at pctorque.com
if you want more features

its what the pros use. (when not using apple)

good thing about using apple is you can use shake (for compositing) and its really simple with ilife to make dvds and movies of vacations and what not.
