Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Projecting shadows

Hey,

I am attempting to model a tent. I would like shadows from objects inside the tent projected onto the side of the tent when looking from outside. I dont want to be able to see the objects so transparency wont work

How would i get around this problem? user added image

Thanks in advance for your help

Steve

Using MentalRay's simple SubSurfaceScatter shader will do the trick if you set the lights up inside the tent and then set the shader settings so that the light will penetrate deep enough to make it through to the other side of the tent fabric.

There's a difference between transparency and translucency. Maybe you could just adjust the translucency so that only intense light from inside the tent will penetrate to the outside. This way, the fabric will not be transparent but it will have some translucency when the inside light is bright enough. I haven't tried this but It's probably what I would try first.
