This is the end result of a WIP I started a couple of weeks ago. Figuring out how to model the grip was pretty fun...

How'd you model the grip? I'm trying to figure out how to do handwraps. Was playing with ribbons today.

This is an example of why I like Maya and modeling in 3D so much; it is almost like a puzzle figuring these things out. Here is the secret, create the shape of the grip as one block (create a nurbs cylinder and shape it), then make it live and draw a curve around the grip using CV tool (7) of a smal section, start on one end and start duplicating and reshaping the curves to fit tight against the nurbs cylinder. Smooth the curve so that normals are ok and extrude using a circle. It actually takes very little time to do it once you figure it out.

Oh Cool, I tried using the make live technique on the polygon surface at one point and it didnt work right with polygons. I'll use your technique and convert to polies. Thanks user added image

Excellent work Minstrel - I was following the progress of this model in the WIP section and it has come out really well. I really like the detail on the grip and also how you decided to display the sword. Well done mate!

Very nice sword minstrel, interesting and innovative approach to making the grip too. I like the idea that Maya is a puzzle, it certainly beats the crap out of sudoku!!!
