Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Question about polys---->subd's

Hey everyone-
I had a general question about modeling. I am about an intermediate modeler for Maya and decided to start modeling figures instead of basic house and car scenes. It seems that every time i decide to do an organic model and do polys to sub-d transformation, my sub-d image looks boxy. I thought that the whole point of sub-d's was to make the image look smoother and more realistic. Almost the exact opposite happened. I was wondering if there is any system of modeling polys that I do no know about, that will make the model look "smoother" when converting into subd's. Is it the fact that I move each vertex point seperately or is it just my settings to convert into sub-d? Thanks!!!

hey darkslayer13 -

I think you might want to post a picture - maybe a before and after shot - so we can see what the problem is.

1) After you convert press 3 to get the smoothest visuals on your subd image (2 gets medium, 1 gets less smooth).

2) The closer the edges are the less of a smoothing effect you will get.

Cant tell you any more unless we see a picture. Before after hopefully wires suplied.
