Help merging edges or something!

I'm recreating a wheel: Volk TE37 Time Attack Edition wheel for fun and with on of the spokes, i extruded the edge to make a curve. But i can't seem to have the bottom of the spoke and the curved part combine, so it won't let me fill in the hole left on each side. I've tried combining edges, combining vertices, nothing will work. Anything else i can do to get this problem solved? I'm at work now, so i can't post any pics of what it looks like.

Also, how can i make the edges smooth looking? Everything looks like it has flat edges around it?

I'm not even close to being done with it, each spoke needs beveled to make smooth, and all need to be joined together at the middle where the lug nuts are.
