Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Circa 1960 MGA

This is my first post to the Finished Work Forum. I am new to Maya but have been work with 3D programs since the 90's. The tutorials here have helped me immensley, and have had a major effect on my abilities with Maya.

I love car modeling and so decided to challenge myself with by modeling a Brittish classic the MGA circa 1960. While there is still much I could do with the model I'm calling it finished as I need to move on. I hope you like it and welcome any comments.

Thanks,
ub52

Nice car m8.
How did you get that chrome look for your grill?

Hey guys, sorry I've been busy with other things. Thanks for the compliments.

goksimaster: Yeah maybe it is a bit much, but I like shiny things. the car paint is just a simple phong shader with the spec color set to a light pink. The reflection value in these renders was .2.

echo red: Thanks. The secret to good chrome is having something good to reflect in the scene. These renders were done with Mental Ray's FG and Image Based Lighting. An HDRI image was mapped to an IBL sphere and that is what gives the chrome something to reflect. The reflections are very dependent on the HDRI you chose and how it is positioned on the sphere. You can change this by selecting the IBL sphere and rotating it. The image will rotate with the sphere. The actual chrome material is a simple blinn shader with a ramp on the reflection value tied to the facing ratio. I've attached a .ma file with the settings I used.

Hey man nice going, great car that you have chosen. Yeah the car looks abit to reflective just by a little but, also the interior textures could have been a tad better though overall i like it,

keep up the work
