and yes it is a heavy idea to start with a room. if it is your own room, you need to have it perfect. you should start with something simpler if you dont want to be frustrated after a few minutes. a good start are the excellent tut on your maya online documentation (just hit F1).
and if it comes to official version, there is only one version that you can talk about here, and that is the one you downloaded (if it is the personal learning edition) or a commercial version purchased from alias|wavefront. other versions do not exist here. simple rule you should follow if you want to stay here.
if you are total beginner( as you are)... then its best to first go with the Maya Personal Learners Edition.. i will get you kickstarted.. once you kinda like master the modelling techniques get Maya complete or unlimited.... i dont recommend going with the complete right away.. check out the free tutorials the site offers and then try modelling your room... basically, with polygons, most of time the tools which you are going to be using are covered there...
I would start with objects in your room first....just to get an idea about modeling. After you are happy with the way they turned out give the room a go.....Maya get's a little frustrating so be patient and all will be fine
