Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

I am new to this forum and i have been using Maya for about 5-6 years and i learned a lot about it from many many tutorials and experiments. Here i whant to know your opinion about this combination , because i consider Zbrush a powerfull tool.

I have been learning Maya for about a year now. Learning it slowly, but with lots of help here. I just recently got ZBrush and havent even opened it, but from the work I've seen.. its an amazing companion tool to Maya and I cant wait to get a chance to start trying to work with it. I'll be watching here just to see what more experienced users of both Maya and ZBrush will have to say and show!!

Z brush is a really great tool, i've not really used it that much as i'm waiting for a tablet to really use it in anger as you cant really get uber detail using a mouse.

I think depending on your polycount that your after and what the models for you could add more detail and definition in Z brush for the muscles.

I would post this in the WIP in progress section, you'll get more crits and comments posting there.

Cheers

What do you think about my model, as you can see it isn't finished and i also have a head also detailed in Zbrush.

Yes i agree but i am also trying to animate this model and the more polygons the harder it is. A specially when you paint the weights.

Are you using displacement maps from z brush since you can take a low res model and divide it 5 times or so in Zbrush. You can then add lots of details and save all this as a displacement map. You can then use the displacement map on your low res geometry in maya for rendering.

Bare in mind your render times will go up but the results can certainly be worth the extra wait.

To enhance my modeling skill i have downloaded an anatomy book and i will use it to detaile more the model, and as i said before i don't want a very high rez model because it is harder to animate, the body model has almost 50.000 polygons.

50,000 polys..wow.....both models I have posted are under 3000, and with Zbrush I am hoping to use a displacment map to detail the models alot more without raising the poly count.

Creature....I should ad, these models are being done from the book, "Game Character Development in Maya " by Antony Ward

It looks good but it is very low on polygons and very low detailed and the book you said it's for games and it is supose to be low on polygons. To improve your performance i recommend using a anatomy book, and get more polygons!

Or you can try using smooth on the models because in smoothens out the edgens of the polygons or go to NORMALS\SOFTEN EDGE and it makes the normals to be at 180 degrees.

May I interupt, what Blayd is saying, is that his/her model has only 3,000 poly yet look at the detail, for 50k polys your is extremely poorly distributed, having thousands of polys doesnot automatically make your model more realistic or accurate, it all depends on placement and flow of the geometry. I know Zbrush bumps up this a hell of a lot but you could achieve the same results with probably 1/5 of the polys you have used. Check out the topology thread, there is no point having polys for the sake of it, they should each be placed purposefully.

Don't take this to heart, just a pointer. Happy modelling.

I used a lot of polygons to make the model very realistic and the picture that i put here is a work in progress meaning it isn't finished and i will work more on the model untill is looks very good. That is why o started this threat to know your opinions and i will work more on the model. Organic modeling isn't my strong point!!!
