Problem with Render Layers

I have 2 render layers, to which I add all objects, lights and cameras. on layer1 I set it so that it is a color render, and layer 2 I set so that it is a shadow render (using the little checkboxes) and do nothing else to the render layers. I reder the image as multilayered psd file. Now after it has finished, I get a black background, a layer with the shadows on, and annoyingly the color layer is just all black. Any idea what might be up?

odd, now I can't get the shadow layer to work.

The scene has 5 lights in it, 1 key light (shadows), 2 duller fill lights at the sides (no shadows) and a 2 highlights at the back to the sides (shadows)

could it be that it is just adding all the shadows together and coming up with all black (since the highlights will be totally shadowed at the front?)

here's an odd one, when I do my shadow pass (now working, no idea why) the grass appears in it, with colour... any idea why? (I've just removed the grass from the shadow layer now)
