what to set up so that modeling affects both sides?

what do you have to set up in order to have your model mirrored and updated in real time? you knbow, when you edit one side it automatically updates the other.

im tired of modeling only half and having to clean up when i duplicate over.

In Maya 8.5 and 8 (I think) theres a mirror move, rotate, scale option that you can use.
