Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Nasty lines on smooth mesh

Hey guys, I have a beautiful model of a murcielago coming along, and ahead of time i smoothed it out. The front looks great as seen in the perspective view, but the sides have these black outines of some geometry. I'm guessing this can be either a verticies problem when joining them or some sort of UV overlap. Does anyone know the problem and solution?

is the merge threshold when you merge vertices above 0?

I have no idea. I played around and found out that while extracting, sometimes there are extra faces. About 10 or so which overlapped. Simply deleting them and re-extruding did the trick.

Your statement abouve is the problem.

You need to set the option of Keep Faces Together on.

In Maya 7 its found at Polygons >Tools Options>Keep Faces Togeter.

In Maya 8+ it Mesh Tools Options >Keep Faces Togther.

Thank you, But I have figured the faces problem when extracting. However, onoce they are overlapping and you set the option to keep them on, the lines dont dissapear. So i needed to go in there and delete the overlapping faces and sometimes extrude again.
