Make the backround transparant?

I have an AVI animation of my render. Problem is, it's backround is black. I want to make it transparant so I can overlay another clip over it.

How do I do that? I heard something about a backround shader..but..?

you shouldnt export as an AVI, render it out as a TGA image sequence. that will automatically make the background transparent.

Ive never used video mach but does it support alphas? Just that you will need to have a programme that supports it.

also did you render it with the alpha channel?

ALso if you render in mental ray you have to turn on alpha channels in the renderoptions it's under custom passes(or something like that)user added image
