Spherical particel attribute - Threshold?

Hi,

in the tutorial I'm following (their using maya 6) the spherical particles have an attribute (under Render Attributes) called Threshold. This allows the particels to merge with one another to create a kind of gooey/viscous liquid effect.

It isn't under that tab in Maya 8.5.

Anyone know where it is, or if it's been removed for some reason?

thanks,

gubar

Edit: My mistake he was using the Blobby Surface type.

But, now they won't render, regardless of which of the three renderers I use. I just get a black screen.

Any ideas why this is?
