Graphics card problem?

I am trying to do a tutorial that introduces textures on Maya and involves putting a UV mapped targa image on my model.. but when I try to assign the material in the hypershader it does some weird things..

It shows an error saying there is no object and then the the texture image is transparent in the working view and in the rendered image..

I don't know if it's some setting issue I messed up or if my graphics card is too weak because there is another error message saying it changed some settings for some reason..

This is the system I have.. and I have been told the graphics card is weak..

I kind of got it to work at one time.. so I know i's not a hardware issue.. it must be a setting.. but I can't figure out which setting is messed up.
