Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world

setting up a guide
I have since done the same with a few other images to get me started..
today I went to put a lambert (using a scource image) image onto a nurbs plane but when i assign the material to the selection the plane just goes grey..
any ideas what im doing wrong?
