so i got the "learning autodesk maya 2008 foundation" book as people recomended to me a few months back and i would now recomend to anyone else beginning on maya
so heres a hut i made that the book guides you to do.
Beer glass scene creation
This course contains a little bit of everything with modeling, UVing, texturing and dynamics in Maya, as well as compositing multilayered EXR's in Photoshop.

About GecT's advice:
You can turn shadow casting on for you light in the material attribute and turning raytracing on in the render settings.
Try adding some bump mapping to your textures.
