colour management and calibration

Hi Folks,

wondering how and if you deal with this for your 3d work?

Having recentley installed a 2nd monitor (of a different model to my main) and finding it near impossible to match it image wise, and also printing some work to paaper and seeing the desktop/print discrepancy, made me realise maybe I should look at this a bit more.

Anyone deal with this at all?

To my knowledge, Maya runs in RGB color space. If your wanting your printouts to look correctly then take your renders into Photoshop and convert the RGB to CMYK color space and then assign a color profile. That way you can work within the color limitations of your printer. I've started using Gimp but although I can assign color profiles, I haven't figured out how to convert to CMYK yet.

Also, as for your 2 monitors, make sure they are both set up for the same color temperature. But keep in mind that 2 different monitors can have 2 different available color spaces. You'll probably have to adjust the brightness, contrast and the temperature. If you have calibration software you can adjust the gama too. Easier said than done, but google should provide you with lots of info on the subject.

I'm kind of new to all this but maybe this info will help lead you in the right direction.

thanks for the reply. I will have a look into cmyk colour space and saving profiles in photoshop - I actually had no idea what cmyk colout space was so you've pointed me well in the right direction.
