Making a reel is a must. There are a lot of guides on how to make a good demo reel. The biggest thing is to be good at what you're applying for. I've seen a lot of demo reels where the work is very sub-par. The second thing is, keep trying. I had to shop around to around 15 different companies before I even got a call back. It is hard, but it is possible!

Good luck! user added image

to be exact, demo reel, experience and knowledge.. everything... demo reel is the first thing they'll see - to measure how much u can accomplish, then the knowledge - while working. that means, if u have a really impressive demoreel but while working, u can't even do a simple work, then it's useless.
next and most important thing u have to know is u can' get a job in the first/second try. u have to keep trying...

It's ok here in Canada. Places are still hiring. Some studios have had to cut way back, but most are still around and kicking user added image
