Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Steve - Horror Challenge

Hey Guys,

I'm in! Ive not touched Zbrush for ages or done any orgaincs for a while (been doing a lot if VFX, particle and fluid work for a short film) so I want to get back into it.

My Idea is a Mongroid

Hopefully horrible enough!

I'll make a start today.

Cheers

Steve

Been watching this new challenge bring quite a few people in, so it looks like you really picked a winner for a challenge theme gster123.

I might join in and do a Zombie or something.

Hope to see your base mesh soon gster123!

Cheers THX, a Zombie's a perfect one, I'm surprised that no ones done it to be honest!

Blocked out a head and a torso so far.going to keep blocking the rams and legs and pose him/it then adjut the base. Just need to get a flow going.

Though it going straight in to Zspheres for the base but, well I'm old and like the Maya base mesh -> Zbrush workflow, I can then determine the overall topology off the bat (granted it would be easier to go straight in and sculpt!

Don't let your topology determine your model, determine your model, then build your topology around that. :p

I know it's the traditional way of doing things, but it severely hinders your workflow. Defining your final topology before you start will just get in the way, as you'll always be forced to follow it. You wouldn't be able to exaggerate your forms, sculpt new one, or basically- sculpt freely. As you'll distort your topology.

And if anyones thinking "I can just retopo it later!"... then why did you bother spending the time to build the basemesh in the first place?

Zspheres, GO!

Though, saying that, there are times when a basemesh might come in handy :p

Sorry for ranting, Nice start!

Dude, I know exactly what you mean!

I'll be honest, thing is I'm a little scared of the full Z workflow, I know I should dive in, but to be honest I have not had the chance to explore it all.

Ive made some pretty decent Zsphere models that Ive sculpted for a trial but for a "product" I go to my old known workflow.

Shows I'm getting old!

Also Ive gone into doing effects with fluids and particles (i'll post up the work when I can, or the film as its a short, or at least a link) so coming back to orgaincs, well I need to refresh, knowing what I need to do for the base then going in. Then again I have made me mesh a lot lower that I normally, or should I say, I would have.

I want to use this as a simple mesh, thats then going to have most of the work in Z as Ive been lacking there and really want to get into it, we've geting mud at work so I'll have to get that nailed down, then again I may push for Z.

Cheers

Steve

Yeah, it just makes sense to me.

I've used Mud too, it's not too bad actually. I just prefer ZB, a lot more features, and a generally better feel when sculpting (imo).

Yeah, post some link to your FX work, would be cool to see. That's one thing I've never really played with.

So, you're actually working on a movie? I thought you were teaching... either way... congrats.

Shame there were no sneak peaks of the SFX.

But it looks beautifully shot.

All of the above mate, doing the VFX on the side from teaching, helps me, the uni and the film!
