Don't let your topology determine your model, determine your model, then build your topology around that. :p
I know it's the traditional way of doing things, but it severely hinders your workflow. Defining your final topology before you start will just get in the way, as you'll always be forced to follow it. You wouldn't be able to exaggerate your forms, sculpt new one, or basically- sculpt freely. As you'll distort your topology.
And if anyones thinking "I can just retopo it later!"... then why did you bother spending the time to build the basemesh in the first place?
Zspheres, GO!
Though, saying that, there are times when a basemesh might come in handy :p
